The State Examination (Staatsexamen) NT2 is available at two levels:
- Programme 1, corresponding to B1 language level
- Programme 2, corresponding to B2 language level
The exam consists of four separate components: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Each component takes approximately one to two hours and is assessed individually. If you do not pass one component, you only need to retake that specific part. To obtain the diploma, you must pass all four components.
Differences between Programme I and Programme II
The main differences between the two programmes are the complexity and level of the texts and tasks.
Programme II uses more advanced and in-depth texts. The vocabulary in Programme II is more complex and less common. The required grammar knowledge is the same for both programmes.
In general, B1 is suitable for practical, everyday communication, while B2 is aimed at those who want to study or work at a higher professional level in the Netherlands. Both diplomas are officially recognized by the Dutch government and can be used to meet certain civic integration (inburgering) requirements, depending on your situation.
Exam dates and registration
The State Examination NT2 is organised eight times per year on fixed dates. Registration periods open several weeks in advance.

Preparation
The best way to prepare for the State Examination NT2 is to first ensure that you have reached the required language level (B1 for Programme I or B2 for Programme II). This can be achieved through structured courses or independent self-study, depending on your learning preferences.
Once you are approximately at the required level, it is recommended to start practicing with official sample exams. This will help you become familiar with the format, timing, and types of questions you can expect. Some candidates choose to prepare independently and take the exam once they feel confident.
If you prefer more targeted support, NedLes offers personalised guidance through private lessons. These sessions are tailored to your individual needs and focus on exam strategy, common pitfalls, and practical tips to improve your performance in each component.
